SEPANG: Ministries are working together to ensure that the Malaysian sports scene takes centrestage at the international level, said Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.
He said it was not a necessity to have so much “compartmentalisation” and that more importantly, the Youth and Sports Ministry and the Education Ministry could work together.
“In fact, they are doing very well. In the past, I have been in Youth and Sports and I know that they’re working together with the Education Ministry.
“Let’s be focused on our task,” he told reporters.
Liow said the Government was “coming in a big way” to support Malaysian athletes.
“We’re confident we’re heading in the right direction to create more sportsmen in Malaysia.”
He said all Malaysians were proud to see the fantastic performances of Datuk Lee Chong Wei and other athletes at the Rio Olympics.
He hoped their fighting spirit would spur more athletes to perform well in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
“Sport events can further strengthen our unity and our Malaysian identity. Malaysia is now very near to getting a gold at the Olympics.
“We need to work harder to obtain a gold and we’re confident we will achieve it one day,” Liow said.
