KUALA LUMPUR – The Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2015 (LIMA’15) will focus on the Asean community’s involvement as an initiative to strengthen ties and to boost the maritime and aerospace defence industry.

Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said the Asean community’s involvement in LIMA’15, to be held from March 17 to 21, was important as the Asean region was the fifth largest economic market in the world and which recorded a high demand for defence equipment and new commercial aircraft.

In this regard, he said, the Defence Ministry would implement progammes that could attract the interest of Asean member countries.

“For example, the Youth and Sports Ministry will organise voluntary programmes involving Asean youths to reflect the spirit of togetherness and solidarity among the region’s youths, hence rejecting extremism and radicalism.

“With regard to the Tourism and Culture Ministry, it will organise the LIMA Carnival with performances featuring the unqie culture and heritage of the Asean countries,” he said after officiating at the LIMA’15 website launching-cum-appreciation ceremony, here, today.

The minister said to date, 92 per cent of the exhibition space provided at LIMA’15 had been sold to 476 companies in the maritime and aerospace industry in 35 countries.

He said LIMA was not only a platform for foreign countries to showcase their capabilities and achievements, but also for the local industry players to compete at the global level.

Out of the 476 participating companies so far, 247 are local companies which will showcase their technological expertise and assets. Among them are Boustead Heavy Industries Corporation Berhad, Sapura Group and Nadi Sdn Bhd.

Hishammuddin said the 16 countries which were major regional and international players participating in LIMA’5 included the United States, United Kingdom, South Korea, Australia, China and Japan.

He said there would be seven major conferences and activities at LIMA’15, namely the Chiefs of Navy Roundtable Talks, Air Chief Conference, MIGHT Open Forum, Invest Malaysia Forum, Maritime and Aerospace Meeting, Asean Aviation Summit dan Asean Business Forum.

On the flood victims in Kelantan, Hishammuddin said about 4,000 of them would be placed at three National Service (NS) Training Programme camps and a Territorial Army camp.

The four camps were vacated yesterday and the NS trainees sent to the camps in other states.- BERNAMA
