TANGKAK – The father of the state’s first flood victim was shocked when he heard that his son who does not like swimming, drowned in a swolled ditch while having some water fun with friends at Kampung Tanjung Labuh, in Ledang, near here, Sunday evening.
Abd Hamid Buang@ Hassan, 43, said the second of four siblings, was not a very good swimmer and rarely ventured to rivers.
“To my knowledge he does not like to swim in rivers not to mention in flood waters… I do not know why he did so today,” the father told reporters at the Tangkak Hospital, here.
In the 2.30 pm incident, the body of Abd Hadi Abd Hamid, 14, was found by members of the Fire and Rescue Department and Civil Defence Department who conducted a search six metres from where he is believed to have jumped into the ditc h.
It is understood that a witness said the victim was left in the lurch after he jumped into the 3.6-metre deep trench swollen with water after heavy rains.
Abd Hamid said of late his son was behaving strangely, he was not keen to help him repair the motorcycles in his workshop while previously he (the son) would do so diligently.
He said during the incident, he was in his workshop and rushed to the scene after being informed by his wife about the tragedy that had befallen his son.
Meanwhile, Tangkak Fire and Rescue Department chief Azhar Elmi Mustofar said eight personnel and two officers were dispatched to the scene after receiving a call from the public at 2.53 pm.
“The body was found at 3.14pm at the bottom of the ditch and taken to the Tangkak Hospital for post-mortem,” Azhar Elmi said. – BERNAMA
