KUALA LUMPUR – Government leaders must adapt to the real time news environment as today’s news cycle needs them to give real-time response to any issues, Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin said.
Khairy, who appeared as the last speaker at Umno International Forum here today, said leaders must also adapt to the new changes, where social media runs an unlimited connectivity and speedier access.
The much sober environment at the Umno International Forum turned lively as Khairy took the floor, highlighting the core challenges faced by government leaders in a hyperconnected world.
He said as much as social media was being fully utilised, it actually created another source of authority because people tend to believe what they read in social media compared to the conventional ones.
“We cannot deny that social media is the best influential medium and today’s news cycle has changed into real time news and thus, leaders must also be able to give their responses in real time.
“People prefer politicians who can give quick response through Twitter or Facebook without having to read a prepared statement. They want to see spontaneous feeds,” he said.
Khairy also stated that today’s leaders should also engage in issues more transparently and consistently as the trend in social networking had evolved into a new dimension.
“The public are no longer passive recipients, they are now the active ones in social media and the trend is not only about sharing or spreading information, but also sharing opinion and make it viral,” he said.
Khairy’s unique performance and interesting facts clearly impressed former Moroccan Youth and Sports Minister, Moncef Belkhayat.
Speaking to Bernama after the forum, Belkhayat said Khairy had really made sense and gave good advice to leaders on how to approach the public in social media.
“This is one of the best presentations that I have attended on how to engage properly in social media for any politicians. He (Khairy) has stated seven important advice for us to engage in social media and I am pleased to be here now,” he said.
Apart from that, Belkhayat also welcomed Khairy to visit Morocco to further strengthen the relations and cooperation between Malaysia and Moroccan youth.
The forum themed ‘A Hyperconnected World: Challenges in Nation Building’ was held in conjunction with the Umno General Assembly 2014 at the Putra World Trade Centre.
The two-day forum began yesterday and featured 127 foreign delegates from 34 parties representing 22 countries and diplomatic corps from almost 70 countries. – BERNAMA
