INCHEON – Coach Datuk Ong Kim Swee wants his players to stay focused during the Asian Games, especially in the final Group A match against Saudi Arabia at Goyang Stadium on Sept 21.
He described the match against Saudi Arabia as crucial because it will determine whether Malaysia qualify or not for the quarter-finals.
“Who will be picked to play is not an issue. I will only pick players who can ensure victory,” he told the media after the match against Laos Wednesday.
Malaysia, represented by the under 23 squad (Harimau Muda), beat Laos 4-0 in the second Group A match at Ansan Wa Stadium.
Despite the big win, Ong praised Laos for restricting Malaysia to only one goal in the first half, scored by defender Mohamad Aidil Zafuan Abdul Razak.
“A 1-0 scoreline is never comfortable but the players managed to play better in the second half resulting in a famous victory for us today,” he added.
Meanwhile, skipper Mohamad Aidil said scoring the first goal was just the tonic needed to come up against a strong Saudi Arabia side.
“The victory today has given the players added confidence to showcase our best display against Saudi Arabia,” he added. – Bernama
