You grew up drinking milk and eating cheese – but could the dairy in your diet actually be causing health problems like weight gain, heartburn, lack of energy, high cholesterol, joint pain, lactose intolerance, and even irritable bowel syndrome? If these symptoms sound familiar, going dairy-free could be the solution to feeling and looking better.
Just this week, Khloé Kardashian—the weight-loss and fitness icon, with a healthy hourglass figure—revealed her secret weight-loss trick. It didn’t involve hours on the treadmill or a painful juice cleanse, or four weeks spent at some celebrity weight-loss camp.
Instead, Khloé did just one thing: She gave up dairy. “In a month and a half, I lost 11 pounds just from not eating dairy, without doing anything else different,†she said.
Now let’s get started!
The first step of the plan is easy: Replace milk with a non-dairy alternative! You can try almond, hemp, soy or rice milks – which are virtually free of saturated fat and cholesterol. They’re available for around RM3 in major grocery stores.
To make sure you’re getting enough calcium and vitamin D, eat a daily serving of green vegetables like broccoli and kale. Additionally, spend 10 minutes in the sun every day. If you’ve got a sensitivity to milk or are lactose intolerant, you may experience less bloating and fewer stomachaches by following this step of the challenge.
Break up with ice cream. You can find non-dairy frozen desserts that offer the texture and taste of your favourite ice cream in a variety of flavors. After 2 weeks on the plan, your mood should improve and you may experience less “brain fog†during the day.
The most difficult part of the plan will likely be cutting out cheese. Non-dairy cheese is harder to find than non-dairy milk, but it’s available in natural or health food markets.
It takes around 10 ounces of dairy to make one ounce of cheese – so it’s a powerful source of inflammation for those who are lactose intolerant. Cutting it out will make a significant difference in how you feel. After around 3 weeks on the plan, you may notice fewer aches and pains and even sleep better. By this stage you should have lost about 5 pounds. Good luck!
