PETALING JAYA: Former Batu Kawan Umno vice-chief Datuk Seri Khairuddin Abu Hassan is “not interested” in joining Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s new political party.
His statement not to join the party to be lead by former deputy prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin comes as a surprise to observers as he was seen as a staunch supporter of Dr Mahathir.
“From the very beginning I have told a number of close friends that I am not keen to hold any political office, especially in the new party that will be led by Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin,” said Khairuddin in a statement on Friday.
He said that he does not need to be in a new political party to continue his case against 1MDB.
“In fact, I am not politically ambitious and will continue to fight against corruption in our country,” he said.
However, Khairuddin assured that his personal relationship with Dr Mahathir remains close.
“In any case, I will remain faithful and obedient to Tun Mahathir on a personal basis,” he said, adding that he will give any assistance required by the former prime minister.
On Thursday, Muhyiddin said he would be applying to register the new political party with the Registrar of Societies (RoS) soon.
Muhyiddin is to be named as the party’s president.
