KUALA LUMPUR – Kenyan runners as predicted continue to dominate the Standard Chartered KL Marathon 2016 when they won most of the open class in both the men’s and women’s categories, which starts and ends at Dataran Merdeka, here today.
Defending champion Kenya’s Kennedy Kiproo Lilan clinched the men’s open full marathon (42 kilometre) title for the fifth time.
Lilan clocked a time of 2 hours, 18 minutes and 57 seconds, ahead of compatriots Tonui Kiprop and Luka Kipkemoi Chelimo, who finished second and third respectively in 2’18:59s and 2’19:24s.
“This year’s race was a tough and challenging one for me. Winning the race for the fifth time in the KL Marathon was a great achievement.
“However, I am not happy with my timing. The time of about two hours 19 minutes was not good enough. May be next year I come back stronger, that’s my promise,” Lilan told reporters after the prize giving ceremony.
For his feat, Lilan pocketed USD17,500 (about RM71,000) while Kiprop walked away with USD7,500 (about RM30,300) and Chelimo had to content with USD5,000 (about RM20,195).
Lilan noted that his biggest victory was at the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon last December and his next assignment would be the Jakarta Marathon in October.
Meanwhile Ethiopia’s Hirut Beyene Guangul boke the Kenyan runners dominance when she reached the finishing line with a time of 2’39:02s, just 0.12 seconds ahead of Kenya’s Naomi Jepkogei Maiyo with 2’39:14s.
Another Kenyan runner, Elizabeth Jeruiyot Chemweno came in third with 2’41:10s.
They pocketed the same prize purse as in the men’s full marathon category.
For the full marathon Malaysian Men’s and Women’s categories, the winners were Muhaizar Mohamad and Yuan Yufang.
A total of 35,000 runners took part in the event which offered a total prize money of USD125,000 (about RM505,000).
