KOTA BHARU – The Kelantan Anti-Smuggling Unit (UPP) has seized numerous brands of smuggled cigarettes worth RM1.5 million in 22 separate cases since early this year.
Its commander Rusli Karim said most of the smuggling cases involved the use of luxury vehicles.
“It also involved premises which we have monitored for a long time. We believe using luxury vehicles is the latest modus operandi,” he said.
He told a media conference at his office, here, today, that the modus operandi was detected since early this year, and among the vehicles used were a Toyota Vellfire and Toyota Estima.
The latest case saw the seizure of numerous brands of smuggled cigarettes and a Toyota Vellfire with an overall estimated worth of RM596,800 in Kampung Kubang Panjang, Pasir Mas, yesterday.
The operation at 3.30pm, led to the finding of 1,980 cartons of kretek and other types of cigarettes in the Toyota Vellfire, which was abandoned.
“No arrest was made because the suspect made himself scarce after realising the presence of the authorities,” he added. – BERNAMA
