KOTA BHARU – The Sultan of Kelantan, Sultan Muhammad V supports the state government’s efforts to implement the Syariah Criminal Code II 1993.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Third Term of the 13th State Assembly Sitting at the Kompleks Kota Darulnaim here today, the Sultan said he was made to understand that the state government would present the private member’s bill in Parliament to enable its implementation in Kelantan.
“Hopefully, it will get the support of all parties,” he said.
The date for the presentation in Parliament has not yet been determined but the private member’s bill would amend the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965 (Act 355) and Article 76A (1) of the Federal Constitution.
Meanwhile, Kelantan Deputy Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah said the Sultan’s support for the implementation of the syariah criminal code was meaningful to the state government.
“We are encouraged to continue with the implementation of the Syariah Criminal Code now that it has the support of the Sultan of Kelantan,” he told reporters after the ceremony.
Mohd Amar said although the DAP had different views about the implementation of the hudud law, this was not an obstacle for the effort to be continued.
He said at the four-day Kelantan State Assembly (until Thursday), the state government would amend the Syariah Criminal Code and hopefully all 45 state assemblymen, including the 12 from Barisan Nasional, would give their support.
“We will debate it on Wednesday as scheduled. We expect to get the full support of those present. Because in 1993, when the enactment of the Syariah Criminal Code II was presented and passed, all who were present supported it, including the two assemblymen from Barisan Nasional,” he said.
Earlier, the Sultan inspected a guard of honour comprising 102 members and three officers from the 8th Battalion of the Pengkalan Chepa General Operations Force.
Also present were Tengku Mahkota Kelantan Tengku Dr Muhammad Fa-iz Petra ibni Sultan Ismail Petra and Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Yakob. – BERNAMA
