KOTA BARU: The tabling of amendments to the Syariah Criminal Code II 1993 has been adjourned and will continue on Thursday at 9am.
Kelantan’s state assembly speaker Datuk Abdullah Ya’kub stopped the debates for lunch and announced that the state assembly will continue tomorrow.
Mentri Besar Datuk Ahmad Yaakob (pic) had tabled amendments to the law at the Kelantan Legislative Assembly on Wednesday morning.
The proposed amendments to seven key criminal offences seek more rotan lashes under the hudud, apostasy, illegal sexual intercourse, alcohol consumption, making unproven accusations of illicit sex, theft and robbery, causing hurt and murder.
Ahmad said the amendments to the law that will supersede the present Penal Code, will be inserted in thee private member’s bills to be tabled in Parliament by this year that needed a simple majority to enable Hudud to be practised in Kelantan.
Ahmad said the law cannot be applied to non-Muslims, even if they wanted to.
This follows an amendment to the code that previously gave non-Muslims an option to choose hudud or to be tried under conventional laws.
The law contains six parts and 71 sections.
For the law to be enforceable in Kelantan, the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965 and Article 76A(1) of the Federal Constitution has to be amended.
The Kelantan assembly comprises 31 PAS assemblymen, 12 from Umno and one from PKR.
