ALOR SETAR – Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir today expressed his happiness that Kedah Darul Aman, once also known as “Darul Sampah” (Land of Rubbish) has changed its image to become one of the cleanest states in Malaysia.
In fact, he said, this new appearance was admitted by his counterparts from the other states.
“They (the other menteris besar) told me this when they met me or texted me to congratulate me after seeing Alor Star city to be very clean now compared to the past, so are the other areas in the state too,” he said in his speech at the opening of Wisma Idaman, here.
Mukhriz said the achievement had largely been contributed by Environmental Idaman Sdn Bhd (E-Idaman), the company providing solid waste management and public cleansing services in Kedah and Perlis.
“Since serving as menteri besar, I am satisfied with the performance and commitment shown by E-Idaman, not just in looking after cleanliness but its involvement in welfare work as well,” he said.
Mukhriz said people in the state generated almost 1,400 tonnes of garbage daily and the volume increased to 1,800 tonnes a day during the festive periods.
He, therefore, hoped that the separation of wastes at source from this September would be practised by everyone in increasing the rate of recycling, besides reducing the amount of waste disposed of at the landfills.
“I hope E-Idaman and SWCorp will continue to improve their performance to reach the level of zero complaint and to make Kedah the first state to achieve this in the aspect of environmental cleanliness,” he said. – BERNAMA
