ALOR SETAR – Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Tun Dr Mahathir has advised students from the state pursuing higher education in Egypt to stay away from politics there.
He said the students must be strong enough to refrain from being influenced by the current political instability in Egypt and threats from groups such as the Islamic State militants.
“The aim of IS or ISIL is to discredit Islam. We do not want to hear the sad news that Kedah students are involved with undesirable elements such as the IS,” he told reporters after a reception for students leaving for studies in West Asia at the Mahmud College here yesterday.
He said the state government had emplaced special officers to monitor the students in Egypt to prevent them from falling prey to the IS group.
Mukhriz said students should adhere strictly to their aim of acquiring as much knowledge as possible so that they can contribute to the state and nation.
He also said that the students should be wise enough to filter what they were exposed to in terms of ideology and culture lest they be adversely influenced.
A total of 219 Kedah students are being sent to Egypt this year, most of them to the Al-Azhar University. – BERNAMA
