JOHOR BAHRU – Kedah lifted the Charity Cup, beating Johor Darul Ta’zim 5-4 in a penalty shoot-out after a 1-1 draw at the Tan Sri Hassan Yunos Stadium in Larkin here, tonight.
JDT, coached by Benjamin Mora, who replaced the outgoing Mario Gomez, scored first through captain Safiq Rahim in the 40th minute from the penalty spot.
Referee Suhaimi Mat Hassan awarded the spot-kick after JDT import player Brian Federico Ferreira was brought down in the box by Kedah’s Mohd Asri Mardzuki.
However, JDT’s joy was shortlived, as Kedah equalised in the 63rd minute through their skipper Baddrol Bakhtiar.
The 1-1 result at full time gives both teams a point in the Super League.
JDT have won the last two Charity Cups in 2015 and 2016, while Pahang were champions in 2014.
The trophy was presented to Kedah by Football Malaysia Limited Liability Partnership (FMLLP) chief executive officer, Kevin Ramalingam. – BERNAMA
