JITRA – The Kedah government has declared ‘Mek Mulung’, a traditional Malay theatre unique to the state, as a performing arts heritage.
Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Tun Dr Mahathir said the state government would initiate efforts to promote the 400-year-old theatre on a national and global scale.
“Mek Mulung has been performed from generation to generation for more than 400 years in Kedah. With this recognition, the path is open for Mek Mulung to be eventually recognised by Unesco as a world heritage,” he said when opening a summit of Malaysian writers and launching a book on Mek Mulung here last night.
According to the website of the Department of National Heritage, Mek Mulung contains elements of acting, singing, dancing as well as music. It says there are several main stories in this art form, and one of the well-known ones is ‘Puteri Cahaya Bulan’.
Mukhriz also announced the setting up of the Writers Foundation of Malaysia non-governmental organisation to help drive the writing industry in the country.
“The objective is to unite the various communities and help Malaysia become a highly developed civilisation,” he said. – BERNAMA
