ALOR SETAR: Kedah state assemblymen, including the menteri besar and state executive councillors, will get a salary increase effective Jan 1 next year.
The salaries of the assemblymen, the speaker of the legislative assembly and the state executive councillors were last revised 11 years ago, in 2004.
The salary increase is provided for in the Administrative and Legislative Assembly Members (Remuneration) (Amendment) Bill 2015 that was passed today by the state legislative assembly.
The enactment provides for the salary of the assemblymen to rise from RM4,112 to RM11,000 a month.
The salary of the deputy speaker of the assembly will rise from RM3,993 to RM7,000 a month while the salaries of the speaker and 10 state executive councillors will go up from RM6,109 to RM14,000 a month.
The salary of the menteri besar will go up from RM14,175 to RM22,000 a month.
In winding up debate on the bill, Menteri Besar Datuk Mukhriz Tun Dr Mahathir said the state government undertook a study of the salary increase by making comparisons with the other states.
“The percentage of salary increase for Kedah assemblymen is the least among the states,” he said.
Mukhriz said the salary revision was in tandem with the increased workload and responsibilities of elected representatives in serving the people.
