KUCHING – Kampung Tangga in Sarawak was today declared a rabies-infected area, raising to seven the number of rabies-infected villages in the Serian district.
This was announced in a statement by Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, who is also chairman of the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee.
The six other villages are Kampung Paon Sungai Rimu, Kampung Paon Sungai Rimu Bakung, Kampung Remun, Kampung Lebor, Kampung Krait and Kampung Saroban.
Kampung Saroban was declared rabies-infected yesterday. The five other villages were so declared on July 4.
Also on that date, a vaccination exercise was launched for all pet animals in an area within a 10-km radius of the villages.
The fourth victim is a five-year-old girl from Kampung Ampungan in Serian.
Noor Hisham said Active Case Detection (ACD) to trace dog-bite cases had been implemented in the rabies-infected Serian district by the Serian Health Office and the Sarawak Health Department.
“ACD was implemented in 96 settlements encompassing 5,663 households, and 21,978 people have been questioned about dog bites.
“A total of 225 dog-bite cases were detected in the rabies-infected Serian district and the victims have been administered treatment. Health education on rabies was also held for the villagers,” he said. – BERNAMA
