PUTRAJAYA – For the first time ever, a Kampung Boy Award ceremony will be held to recognise and appreciate the contributions of cartoonists in the country.

Malaysian Cartoonists Club president Mohd Desa Omar said eight cartoonists would be receiving the award in their respective categories at the event, which will be held on Oct 12 at Menara Sri Wilayah here.

The eight categories are Young Talented Cartoonist Award, Animated Cartoon Character Award, Editorial Cartoonist Award, Malaysiana Cartoonist Award, Best Cartoonist Award, Legendary Cartoonist Award and Jury Award.

The main award to be presented is the Kampung Boy Award 2015, Mohd Desa told reporters here today.

He said the main award was named the Kampung Boy Award after the popular series by Malaysia’s prolific cartoonist, Lat, or his real name Datuk Mohammad Nor Khalid. The Kampung Boy had been reprinted 16 times and translated into seven languages.

“We hope that the event will become the stepping stone to revive the ailing cartoon industry,” he said. – BERNAMA
