TANGKAK – Fifteen special pre-Aidilfitri pasar tani (farmers’ markets) will open across Johor from this June 21 to 24 to facilitate consumers obtaining the essential food items required to prepare for the Hari Raya celebration.
State Agriculture, Agro-based Industry, Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Committee chairman, Ismail Mohamed said these special pasar tani would offer goods at five to 20 per cent cheaper than the normal market price.
“Some 290 traders are involved in these pasar tani in 10 districts, namely Johor Bahru, Kulai, Pontian, Kluang, Kota Tinggi, Mersing, Batu Pahat, Segamat, Muar and Tangkak which are scheduled to operate from as early as 7am.
“About 500,000 coconuts, 15,200 chickens and 120 heads of cattle will be made available at these pasar tani as demand for these essentials will sharply increase for the festive celebration,” he said after the state-level launching of the special pasar tani at the Permanent Pasar Tani Complex in Bukit Gambir, here, today.
Also present were Johor FAMA director Zainal Abidin Yang Razalli and Tangkak FAMA officer Rahim Md. Diah.
He said the amount of coconuts was part of the imported supply of 13 million units up to May for nationwide consumption and the figure was expected to reach 17 million close to Aidilfitri.
According to him, supply of vegetables was also expected to be sufficient throughout Ramadan until the month of Syawal with the output of red chillies and long beans in Johor seen as consistent at 800 tonnes and 1,500 tonnes per month, respectively.
“With the special pre-Aidilfitri pasar tani, consumers can make price comparisons to avoid price manipulation by irresponsible traders,” he said.
At the event, Ismail also handed out contributions to 22 needy students from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Bukit Gambir. – BERNAMA
