JOHOR BARU: A heated argument between man and son turned fatal when the unemployed man allegedly stabbed his eldest child at their home in Taman Desa Jaya here.
Azrul Hanafi, 23, also unemployed, died in the living room from a chest wound.
He was quarrelling with his 54-year-old father at around 7pm on Tuesday when they began fighting.
Seri Alam OCPD Supt Jokhiri Abd Aziz said both men fought in front of the victim’s 49-year-old mother.
“Azrul was stabbed once while the father had two stab wounds on his chest and abdomen,” he said.
He said that police took over an hour to get the father to put down the knife before arresting him.
“The man has been warded at Sultan Ismail Hospital while the son’s body has been sent for a post-mortem,” Supt Jokhiri said.
He said an initial investigation revealed that long-standing financial troubles may have triggered the argument.
“The family’s only breadwinner is the mother, who works as a canteen assistant in a factory. Her three other children are still schooling,” he said.
A neighbour, who declined to be named, said the incident shocked the people in the neighbourhood.
