JOHOR BARU: A 34-year-old man has been detained after a revolver and 30 bullets were found in a pick-up truck belonging to Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) football striker Safee Sali (pic).
The Smith & Wesson revolver and bullets were found in a bag which was placed in the back seat of the Ford Ranger 4WD. Police had stopped the vehicle at a road block near the Kempas exit of the North South Expressway at about noon on May 15.
Safee, who gave a statement at the Johor Baru (North) police station on Monday, said that he received a call from the police while he was celebrating his team’s FA Cup victory.
JDT beat PKNS of Selangor 2-1 at the Shah Alam Stadium on Saturday night.
“I was with my team-mates celebrating the Cup win with the fans in Segamat when I received a call from the police on Sunday afternoon notifying me about the arrest.
“I was shocked and a bit angry as the person had misused my trust as not only he was driving my car for unknown reasons but was found with a gun,” Safee told reporters outside the police station.
Safee said he did not know the suspect as it was the first time that he had left his car at the workshop in Taman Setia Tropika for repairs.
“I was supposed to take back the truck from the workshop on Tuesday (May 16) but the police told me that the vehicle will be held for for investigations,” he said.
It is learnt that the suspect, who has previous records, claimed that he found the gun during a fishing trip with his friend in Pasir Gudang last month.
Johor CID chief Senior Asst Comm Kamarul Zaman Mamat said the suspect has been remanded to assist with the investigations.
SAC Kamarul urged those with information to contact the state police hotline at 07-2212999 or lodge a report at the nearest police station.
