KUALA LUMPUR – Reigning champions Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) will square off against Kaya FC of the Philippines in the last 16 of the Asian Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup at Larkin Stadium on May 25.
The tournament uses the knock out format where the winners will be decided in 30 minutes extra time play or penalty shootout if the game ended in a draw after regulation time, said the AFC website;www.the-afc.com.
JDT maintained their unbeaten record in Group H after collecting 18 points out of six matches.
The Southern Tigers biggest victory was the mauling of Ayeyawady United of Myanmar, 8-1 on Feb 28 at Larkin Stadium.
Kaya FC, on the other hand, finished as runner-up of Group F behind Kitchee SC of Hong Kong with five points compared to the latter’s eight points.
Malaysia’s other representantive, Selangor failed to progress to the last 16 after finishing third in Group E behind Tampines Rovers of Singapore and Ceres La Salle FC of the Philippines.
The Red Giants collected eight points.
