PETALING JAYA – AFC Cup champion Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) will have familiar faces in Group H of the 2016 AFC Cup, Asia’s second tier club competition.
JDT’s assistant coach Ismail Ibrahim said Myanmar’s Ayeyawady United and JSW Bengaluru from India who were drawn in the same group were also their opponents in this year’s AFC Cup competition with the exception Lao Toyota from Laos who are the other team in the group.
“We do not have any option because the draw has been done. We hope we can repeat a similar feat this year although we do not know the prowess of Lao Toyota,” he told reporters after 2016 AFC Cup and 2016 Asian Champions League (ACL) draw here today.
Ismail, a former International and Selangor stalwart said the team’s pre-season preparations were aimed at gaining a positive result against Thailand’s Muangthong United FC in the 2016 ACL on Feb 2.
The ACL will be a tough competition but Ismail is hoping that his players would be able to put up a credible show against the club from Thailand.
The winner of the JDT versus Muangthong United FC match will face Shanghai SIPG from China on Feb 9 to advance to the top tier of the Asian club competition.
Apart from JDT, 20 other clubs will be involved in the qualifying stage.
