JOHOR BAHRU – The Southern Tigers failed to qualify to the next round in the AFC Cup despite a 3-2 win over Song Lam Nghe An FC in Group H’s final match at the Tan Sri Hassan Yunos Stadium, Larkin here tonight.
The Johor Darul Ta’azim (JDT) team who only needed another goal to advance to the next round, failed to do so despite dominating the game from the first-half.
JDT’s first goal came in the 36th minute from a solid shot by Muhammad Syafiq Ahmad which went straight into goal.
After launching attack after attack, JDT scored their second goal via a Muhammad Syafiq kick two minutes later which the Vietnamese goalkeeper Tran Van Tien failed to stop.
Coach Nguyen Duc Thang’s side, however, managed to score in the 40th minute through PT Nhat.
One minute left before the first half ended, the Vietnamese side managed to level 2-2 via a powerful header from Ho Tuan Tai.
In the second half, JDT scored their third goal through a penalty which Safiq Rahim converted in the 66th minute.
The penalty was awarded to JDT after opposing player Nguyen Si Nam fouled Safiq Rahim.
The score stayed at 3-2 up to the final whistle. – BERNAMA
