JOHOR BAHARU – Johor Darul Ta’zim’s (JDT) took another step towards its aspiration to becoming the first team from the country to make an impact in the Asian Champions League (ACL) after moving into the second round by beating Bengaluru FC, from India, 2-1 at the Larkin Stadium, here Wednesday.
The squad under coach Bojan Hodak however, had to go the extra mile to score the winner after both teams were tied 1-1 in regulation time.
Super-sub S. Chanthuru who replaced Mahalli Jasuli in the 70th minute was the hero of JDT when he struck the winner in the 96th minute to send the 18,000 odd fans at the Larkin Stadium into a frenzy.
After a scoreless first half, Hariss Harun headed JDT into the lead in the 47th minute from a Safiq Rahim corner but Bengaluru struck the equaliser in the very last minute of regulation time through Sunil Chhetri (90) to force the match into extra time.
JDT will now face Thailand’s Bangkok Glass in the second round of the competition on Feb 10. – Bernama
