MELAKA – The Melaka Islamic Religious Department (JAIM) detained a 31-year-old woman in Pulau Besar yesterday on suspicion that she was cohabiting with a man to the extent of having five children out of wedlock.
JAIM enforcement chief Rahimin Bani (pic) said the woman was detained while having a nap at 10 am with all her children, aged between one and 11, in a tent at the beach of the island.
He said JAIM believed that her 37-year-old partner was in the island too but had escaped during the inspection.
“Initial investigation revealed that the woman did not have a marriage certificate and none of her children have a birth certificate. They had lived in Masjid Tanah (Alor Gajah, Melaka) before moving to the island two months ago,” he told reporters here.
Rahimin said the woman, who hails from Jengka, Pahang, claimed to have gotten married to the man in Thailand in 2002 and that four of her children were born in Melaka, while the youngest was born in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan.
The case is being investigated under Section 53 of the Melaka Syariah Criminal Procedure 1991 for cohabitation. – Bernama
