PETALING JAYA: The Mara council has the legal right to suspend the agency’s chairman, said Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
In a statement Tuesday, the Rural and Regional Development Minister said Tan Sri Annuar Musa would be suspended until Mara’s audit committee completes its probe.
“I was informed by the Mara legal advisers that the Mara council possesses full authority to suspend the chairman.
“This is because it does not involve the appointment or sacking, which requires the approval of the minister and the Prime Minister,” he said.
Earlier, Mara council member Datuk Dr Yusof Yacob said Annuar was suspended and asked to go on leave while an internal audit is conducted into allegations over the sponsorship of the Kelantan Football Association (Kafa) by two Mara subsidiaries.
According to Ismail, the suspension is a regular procedure in such investigations.
The Mara council had held an emergency meeting on Tuesday morning, and the suspension was signed by council members as well as government representatives.
“The meeting was attended by all council members and representatives from the Finance Ministry and the Economic Planning Unit (EPU),” said Ismail.
He also said the meeting was held to investigate the alleged sponsorships relating to UniKL and Pelaburan Mara Berhad (PMB) as well as other issues that had gone viral on social media.
“This investigation is to regain the confidence of the public and Annuar Musa was not invited because the meeting was about him.
“In fact, he was not even called in to give an explanation as the council believes it is only right for him to present his explanation to the audit committee,” Ismail added.
Dr Yusof Yacob announced that Annuar had been suspended as Mara chairman as well as the head of Mara’s subsidiary PMB.
Annuar accepted the suspension and said it is the prerogative of the Mara board members to suspend him.
Dr Yusof will assume all the positions held by Annuar.
