IPOH – The Velodrom Rakyat cycling track here is expected to be fully completed by June 2017 in time for the 2018 SUKMA said Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin.

He said work on track restoration which began on Aug 22 at a cost of RM11 million had so far reached four per cent.

“Everything is proceeding smoothly and the track will be using a wooden surface as proposed by experts. The velodrome is based on an open concept, we only need to repair the track surface and several other aspects as the building structure is intact,” he told reporters after attending the 2016 World Conference On Islamic Thought and Civilization (WCIT) here today.

Khairy added that his ministry would be holding a meeting with Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir to discuss the management of the velodrome as soon as it was completed.

“So far the ministry is carrying out restoration work and maybe the Ipoh City Council (MBI) will manage it once it is ready,” he said.

The facility was the first velodrome to be built in Malaysia from public donations and contributions headed by Tan Sri Darshan Singh in 1984.

After receiving the consent of the late Sultan of Perak, the Sultan Azlan Shah velodrome was later named as Velodrom Rakyat. – BERNAMA
