KUALA LUMPUR – The World Conference To Support The Cause of Jerusalem took off at the Al-Azhar Convention Centre in Cairo, Egypt on Wednesday.
Quoting a statement from the Office of Sheikh Al-Azhar, the Palestinian News and Info Agency (Wafa) said the opening ceremony will begin with an address from Sheikh Al-Azhar or the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Dr Ahmed Muhammad Ahmed El-Tayeb. who is the President of the Muslim Council of Elders.
This will be followed by a speech from Palestine President, Mahmoud Abbas.

Held under the patronage of Egypt President, Abdul Fattah as-Sisi, the two-day conference has representation from 86 countries including Malaysia.
Malaysia’s representative is the Federal Territory Mufti, Datuk Dr Zulkifli Mohamad Al-Bakri.
Also gracing the event is the Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of the See of St Mark, Tawadros II; Secretary General of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Dr Yousef Al-Othaimeen; Secretary General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit; Arab Saudi’s Minister of Islamic Affairs, Saleh bin Abdul-Aziz Al ash-Sheikh; Speaker of the Arab Parliament, Meshal al-Selmi and the Secretary General of the Muslim World League, Dr Mohammed bin Abdul Karim Al-Issa.
The first session’s theme will be “The Arab Identity of Jerusalem and Mission”, which will be chaired by former Prime Minister of Lebanon, Fouad Siniora. Topics discussed under this will cover the universal religious status for Jerusalem, the civilisation of Al-Quds, their history and current standing as well as dispelling the propaganda of hate and allegations against Al-Quds and the Palestinians by the Zionists.
The final day is expected to see the participants taking a stand on the matter and coming up with the Cairo Declaration.
The special conference follows the December 6 announcement by United States President, Donald Trump that the US recognised Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and ordered the State Department to start planning the transfer of the US Embassy in Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
This saw a worldwide condemnation of the action, calling it a violation and breach of numerous international decisions including that of the United Nations on the rights of the Palestinian people and the status of Jerusalem city which has special significance for Muslims. – BERNAMA
