JAKARTA: The distribution of fake rice that is believed to have been manufactured from mixed plastic and chemicals is a cause for concern for Indonesians.
The media here had quoted the authorities which received complaints fromÂ consumers alleging they had bought the rice at several shops.
Indonesian Republic Police Force (Polri) was said to have taken action toÂ prevent public unrest by conducting operations to investigate its distribution.
Polri headquarters Information Community Bureau chief Brig-Jen Agus Rianto said the synthetic rice samples were sent to the Drug and Food SupervisoryÂ Agency and police were still awaiting the results of the analysis.
The fake rice was first discovered by a porridge seller known as Dewi inÂ Bekasi near here two days ago.
Dewi, who found the taste of the rice different later lodged a report to the Kota Bekasi Industry and Trade Department.
The plastic rice is believed to contain the chemicals polyvinyl chloride,Â benzyl butyl phthalate (BBT), Bis 2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) and diisononylÂ phthalate (DNIP) which if ingested could cause indigestion and cancer.
Dewi said she bought six litres of rice believed to have been plastic riceÂ at Rp 8.000 per litre from a shop near the place she lived.
The distribution of plastic rice created an uproar since last week after itÂ was believed to have been imported from outside the country and becameÂ widespread.-BERNAMA
