Indonesian Government Planning To Lay Off 1 Million Civil Servants By 2019

JAKARTA: The Indonesian government is planning to lay off a million civil servants in an effort to rationalise the manpower needed to run the country.

The local press on Friday quoted the Minister of Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform, Yuddy Chrisnandi as saying, that with the retrenchment exercise, the government aimed to have a total of 3.5 million civil servants by the year 2019.

Indonesia currently has 4.517 million civil servants employed by the central and local governments. The reduction will be done in stages.
