JAKARTA – Indonesian Military Commander General Gatot Nurmantyo revealed Tuesday that self-styled Daesh is present in almost every province in the country, Vietnam News Agency (VNA) reported.
Speaking with reporters in the capital city of Jakarta, Nurmantyo affirmed that Daesh group operates in Indonesia as clandestine “sleeper cells”, but he warned that they could launch attacks at any time.
The general also said that militant groups affiliated with Daesh are also active in the country.
There is also a possibility that Daesh-linked militants fighting in Marawi city in the southern Philippines will come to Indonesia and unite with their terrorist fellows here, he said.
The same day, an Indonesian police spokesman confirmed that police seized a shipment of 500 explosive detonators. The operation took place at the main airport of South Sulawesi province.
According to investigation, the consignment was bound for Borneo Island.
The police will investigate to find out the purpose of the shipment of detonators, the spokesman said.
The incident occurred with Indonesian security authorities on alert for attacks from militants, particularly those linked with the Daesh group.
Indonesia first witnessed a Daesh attack last year in Jakarta which killed four people.
