JOHOR BAHARU – India beat Great Britain 2-1 to defend the Sultan of Johor Cup (Under-21 Hockey Championship) here, Sunday.
The match played at Johor Baharu Hockey Stadium in Taman Daya was closely fought with the first half ending 0-0.
After the break, India went on the offensive and were rewarded with the first goal when Harmanpreet Singh scored a penalty corner in the 45th minute.
Stung, Great Britain staged a fight back and made it 1-1 when Samuel French scored the equaliser in the 55th minute via a penalty corner.
Sensing victory, Great Britain piled on the pressure but were thwarted by a stubborn India side.
They failed to take advantage when Indian goalkeeper Abhinav Kumar Pandey got the green card and replaced with Subodh Tirkey while another player was sent sent off in the 62nd minute.
India won a penalty corner one minute before the end of the second half which Harmanpreet scored to end Great Britain’s winning streak.
The Sultan of Johor Cup was presented by Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.
Meanwhile, Australia finished third after beating New Zealand 6-2.
Australia’s goals were scored by Simon Benetti (14, 15 min), James Benetti (26 min), Benjamin Craig (28 min), Andrew Scanlon (63 min) and William Gilmore (69 min).
New Zealand, who finished fourth, got their goals through Kim Kingstone (37 min) and Trevor Garrett (54 min).
Malaysia beat Pakistan 3-1 to grab fifth place with goals from skipper Muhammad Haziq Samson (6 min), Mohd Najmi Farizal Jazlan (24 min) and Muhammad Sharil Kabah (32 min).
Pakistan who finished in sixth place got their goal via Muhammad Naveed (45 min). – BERNAMA
