KUALA LUMPUR – The International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) will implement a volunteer programme to develop the Orang Asli community around Gombak, said its president Tan Sri Dr Rais Yatim.
He said that in addition to providing guidance on socio-cultural aspects, IIUM will also conduct a children ‘adoption’ programme and select suitable traditional orang Asli houses to be commercialised and serve as a tourist attraction.
“IIUM is located in the vicinity of the Orang Asli community in Gombak and other plural society. The tribal communities of Temiang, Temuan and representatives of 18 Orang Asli tribes are also here, he said.
He was speaking to reporters after the ‘Sillaturrahim’ visit of IIUM to Kampung Batu 12, Gombak, in conjunction with the Orang Asli Cultural Heritage Programme here, today.
Rais said besides IIUM students, Orang Asli students from around Gombak will also be involved in the volunteer programme. At the same time, IIUM will also help market products such as handicrafts produced by the community in Gombak, besides helping single mothers. – BERNAMA
