KUALA LUMPUR: Inspector- General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar Monday hailed the change of topic of the forum attended by international Islamic preacher Dr Zakir Naik here last night to ensure that it did not touch on other religions.
“The forum proceeded smoothly. I thank the organiser and Dr Zakir Naik for having heeded the instruction of the police,” he told reporters at the police monthly assembly at Bukit Aman here.
Khalid had earlier ordered the cancellation of the forum, titled ‘Similarities between Hinduism and Islam’, at Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) for fear that it might touch on racial and religious sensitivities.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi later decided that the preacher from India could go ahead with the talk so long as the topic was changed.
The new topic was ‘Islam – Problems and Solutions to Humanity’. The forum was attended by more than 20,000 people.
