PETALING JAYA: Datuk Lee Chong Wei has secured a spot in the semi-finals of the men’s singles after defeating Chou Tien-Chen 21-9, 21-15 in straight sets in his quarterfinal match at the Rio Olympics.
Chong Wei will now advance to the semi-finals and will face off against the victor of the tie between Lin Dan of China and Srikanth Kidambi of India in the semi-finals on Friday.
In the first set, Chong Wei powered through to a significant lead right off the bat with 12-6 mid-set, giving Chou little room to recover.
Chong Wei’s drive didn’t end in the second set as he continued to push Chou with another early lead with 11-3 in the middle of the set.
Chou managed to make a comeback, bringing the score to 15-12, but eventually succumbed to Chong Wei’s onslaught.
Malaysia is already enjoying its most successful run at the Games with two pairs having booked their places in the finals guaranteeing Malaysia a minimum of two silvers.
Mixed doubles pair Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying will meet Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir of Indonesia at 11.30 pm in Wednesday’s final, with a gold medal at stake.
The men’s doubles team of Goh V Shem and Tan Wee Kiong will take on Chinese pair Fu Haifeng and Zhang Nan at 10.50pm in Friday’s final.
