JEMPOL – “I was supposed to be in that car,” said Basiron Sulaiman,54, the father of the two siblings who were involved in a tragic accident at Jalan Ulu Rokan Barat here, yesterday.

In the 4.50pm incident on Monday, Nur Hidayah, 21, died on the spot while his brother, Muhammad Amirul, 23, sustained serious injuries after the multi purpose vehicle they were travelling in, drove by the latter lost control and skidded before it crashed to the left side of the road.

Still trying to come to terms with the loss, Basiron, who works as Felda Lui Muda manager said, both Nur Hidayah and Muhammad Amirul were on their way home, after sending their 16-year-old brother back to his school at Vocational College Jasin, Melaka.

“We were supposed to go together with the whole family but due other unforeseen circumstance, I had to ask my son to send his brother. Nur Hidayah offered to accompany them, as my wife and I had to send my 18-year-old daughter to Matriculation College here,” he said.

Basiron added he was shocked to learn about the tragic news, especially when it killed his daughter, who was a year three student at the Universiti Teknologi Mara Seremban 3 majoring in Science Administration.

“Our family used to live at the teachers’ quarters at Bandar Pusat Palong, as my wife works as senior assistant in charge of student affairs at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Seri Perpatih Felda Palong Empat.

But this year’s Aidiladha is the first year we are celebrating it at our new house in Taman Desa Permai, as requested by my daughter.

“She was a good, cheerful and helpful daughter. The night before the incident, she slept at 3am to help her siblings with their school homeworks and assignments,” said Basiron, when met at the Jempol Hospital here, today.

Meanwhile, Jempol acting police chief Superintendent Azham Shah Azlan said the accident occurred at Jalan Besar Bukit Rokan near Felda Bukit Rokan Barat at about 4.40 pm.

He said the multi-purpose vehicle drove by the victim’s brother believed to have lost control and skidded.

“The victim died at the scene due to severe injury on the body and head, while her brother also suffered injuries and the case is investigated under Section 41 of the Road Transport Act 1987,” he said. – NST
