Hullabaloo On Hudud Is Pointless: Nazri Aziz

in Latest/Politics

Meaningless and stupid. That was the reaction from Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz when asked about the heated discussions being held on the implementation on hudud by the Kelantan government.

“I don’t care if my views apply to both sides of the political divide.

“To me, it was never an issue in the first place,” Nazri told The Star Online.

He was responding to PAS president Datuk Seri Hadi Awang’s move to submit notice to Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia on the tabling of a Private Member’s Bill to pave the way for hudud’s implementation in Kelantan.

Citing constitutional and procedural challenges, Nazri said the move was “an exercise in futility,” which PAS was fully aware of.

He said any amendment to the Constitution to allow hudud’s implementation required a two-third majority in Parliament.

Nazri, the former Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department in charge of law, said PAS cannot say for sure that they will get the support of all Muslim lawmakers.

“They (PAS) would still fall short of the two-third majority (148) needed in Parliament,” he said.

There are 222 seats in Parliament of which 149 are held by Muslim MPs, including two from DAP and 14 from PKR. Barisan Nasional has 133 MPs and Pakatan Rakyat 89.

Nazri said the bill was unlikely to go through as Government matters took precedent and there would be no time to table it.

“They are being very silly. Umno knew about it years ago and that’s why we never pursued it,” he said.

Nazri chided PAS for using hudud for political maneuvering to regain support lost from the grassroots after the last general election.

“They are aware that it is impossible but are going ahead with it.

“It’s all a wayang kulit and sandiwara (shadow-play and theatrics) to win back support they (PAS) lost,” he said adding that PAS should move on and focus on helping the rakyat and developing the nation.
