KUALA LUMPUR – A hotel staff was fined RM3,000, in default three months jail, by the Magistrate’s Court here today on account of sexual harassment on a young woman, last month.
Mohammad Kamal, 27, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Siti Radziah Kamarudin, for harassing the 21-year-old woman, at Hotel Impiana, Wangsa Maju, here at around 9.00am on June 25.
He was charged under Section 354 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail sentence of up to 10 years or a fine or whipping or any two of the penalties.
According to the facts of the case, the accused had approached and embraced the woman when she came out of her room, and commenting on her physique.
During mitigation, Mohammad, who was represented by Vincent Chew, appealed to the court for a light sentence as this was the first offence for the accused.
DPP Nor Diana Nor Azwa, urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence due to public safety and causing traumatic stress to the victim and in view of the increasing number of sexual assault cases.
In the same court, an unemployed Vietnamese woman was fined RM5,000, in default five months jail, after pleading guilty to stealing a wallet belonging to Suzana Yahaya, 30, and being in possession of a stolen mobile phone, worth RM350 belonging to Azlilah Abd Lah, 31.
Magistrate Siti Radziah imposed a fine of RM2,000 in default two months jail on Pham Thi Lan, 54, for stealing, while RM3,000, in default three months jail for possessing a stolen phone.
Phan had committed the first offence at Kedai Odeon Walk, Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman, Dang Wangi, here at around 9.45pm on June 26, and the second offence at the IPD Dang Wangi, here. – BERNAMA
