KUCHING – SUKMA 2016 host Sarawak sent out an early warning to their peers by sweeping the first gold medal on offer in the Poomsae mixed pair event when taekwondo competitions kicked off the games.
Augustine Rudy Grocer/Nurul Hidayah Abdul Karim collected 7.37 points in the final round at the Stadium Perpaduan in Petra Jaya, here to give the host state a perfect start in pursuit of the overall title.
The final round saw a fierce competition among the best eight pairs involved and the duo from Sarawak collected 7.38 points for Pyongwon and 7.36 points for Taegeuk 8 demonstration to win the gold.
“We are very happy and grateful to be able to clinch the first gold medal for Sarawak. We did not expect to be winners,” said the pair after the prize presentation ceremony.
The silver medal went to Pek Chew Wen/Brian Yam Ju Sheng of Selangor with 7.16 points while Johor and Negeri Sembilan were awarded bronze medals. – BERNAMA
