SEREMBAN – Mariam Ismail, who has been living alone in a dilapidated house here has not celebrated Hari Raya Aidilfitri since 1994, following the death of her loved ones.
The 63-year-old destitute said Hari Raya had never been the same again after the death of her mother, adding that two years earlier at 22, she lost her husband.
The widow’s life is further complicated as she is afflicted with heart disease, diabetes and asthma.
“Every Hari Raya, only the neighbours visit me and bring along food and biscuits. I feel very sad when I see others celebrating with their families while I have none to celebrate with,” she lamented.
She was speaking to reporters when met at a tithe distribution programme organised by Ampangan assemblyman, Dr Rafie Abdul Malek at Taman Dusun Nyior Ampangan here today.
Meanwhile, Dr Rafie said Tenaga Nasional Berhad’s corporate social responsibility division was planning to build a new house costing RM60,000 for Mariam, but nothing had been finalised yet.
He said he would do his best to assist the widow.
“We will persuade her to relocate as her house is situated in a river reserve area but she had been clinging to the house for sentimental reasons,” he noted. – BERNAMA
