PETALING JAYA: Political activist Hishamuddin Rais (pic) was shocked to find that he was barred from leaving the country on Thursday night.
Immigration officers stopped Hishamuddin from boarding a flight to Seoul, South Korea where he was to attend a function as an observer.
“Why am I banned is my question to the Malaysian authorities,†he said in a press release on Friday.
Hishamuddin said he had been invited to South Korea to act as an observer for a public assembly taking place there on Saturday as well as to meet with the South Korean National Police Agency and the National Human Rights Commission of Korea.
“What I’m trying to do is to help foster respect for human rights among fellow human beings. Why am I not allowed to leave the country?†said Hishamuddin.
Hishamuddin was among several activists, among them PKR’s Rafizi Ramli and Tian Chua and DAP’s Tony Pua, who were barred from leaving the country.
