KUALA LUMPUR – Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein, who has been appointed Minister with Special Functions in the Prime Minister’s Department, says he is prepared to shoulder the responsibility entrusted by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
Hishammuddin, who is also defence minister said his appointment effective today, encompassed roles in various fields according to current needs and described it as an honour and trust given by the prime minister.
“The appointment has also been agreed upon by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and I will meet the prime minister shortly to discuss the assigned roles.
“I pledge to shoulder the additional responsibility and portfolio entrusted with my best ability,” he told a media conference after a meeting with the Adviser to the King of Saudi Arabia, Sheikh Dr Mohamed Abdul Kareem Al-Issa here today.
Hishammuddin said the meeting was held to discuss the implementation of the King Salman Centre for International Peace (KSCIP) in Malaysia.
Hishammuddin said the discussion covered the approach of the governments of Malaysia and Saudi Arabia in KSCIP, in efforts to combat terrorist threats, especially from Daesh.
“We need the involvement of university and military academic experts to ensure success in correcting the ideology of extremist groups on Islam.
“Saudi Arabia is serious and it agreed to fight violence by combining various elements such as belief, ideology, counter-narrative and the intervention of various parties not limited to military aspect,” he said.
However, he said the ministry was mulling over the location of KSCIP and would use a temporary premises for its initial operations.
The one-hour meeting with Sheikh Dr Mohamed Abdul Kareem, who is also Muslim World League secretary-general was held at Wisma Pertahanan.
The establishment of KSCIP in Malaysia was the outcome of the four-day visit of King Salman Abdulaziz Al Saud of Saudi Arabia here in February. – BERNAMA
