The High Court will hear a novelist’s suit against filmmaker Datuk Yusof Haslam and two others over alleged plagiarism of the novel “Aku Bohsia” for five days beginning Oct 19.
Judge Datin Azizah Nawawi fixed the hearing dates during case management in chambers of the matter today, where Elias Idris sued Yusof, his actor-son Mohd Syamsul, and his film company Skop Production Sdn Bhd.
Elias’ counsel M. Kumar said the court also fixed the matter for case management on March 19 to allow the three defendants to amend their counterclaim against his client.
Elias, 62, filed the suit against Yusof, 61, whose real name is Md Yusof Md Aslam, his son, Mohd Syamsul, 31, and Skop Production, on Nov 24 last year.
The plaintiff, who published the novel in 1995 under the pseudonym Anne Natasha Nita claimed there are many similarities between his book and the defendants’ 2009 movie, “Bohsia: Jangan Pilih Jalan Hitam” in terms of plot, characters, and message.
Elias seeks to halt further distribution of the film, damages and any financial returns enjoyed by the defendants due to the alleged infringement, among others.
Previously, both parties attempted mediation to settle the matter. However negotiations broke down on Jan 27.-NST
