KUALA LUMPUR – Director-General of Health Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah has been appointed as the Chair of the Global Surgery Committee of the International Society of Surgery (ISS) for the 2017-2021 term.
The announcement was made by ISS on Dec 25.
Dr Noor Hisham said the appointment as the Chair of the Global Surgery Committee was part of his role as the Councillor at Large of the ISS Executive Committee.
He was appointed to the Executive Board of ISS as Councillor at Large for the five-year term from 2017 to 2021 as announced on Aug 17 during the 47th World Congress of Surgery General Assembly 2017.
Dr Noor Hisham is the first Malaysian to receive such s recognition at this level.
“This adds to the honour for the country; to lead and serve this renowned global society,” he said in a statement.
On his appointment as the Chair of the Global Surgery Committee of ISS he said: “It is with utmost honour and humility that I accept this global leadership role to engage with all national chapters and representatives from the respective countries, to develop the framework in teaching and training programmes, particularly in developing countries, coupled with improving the organisation to adopt changes based on creative ideas and innovations.
“This role will also project ISS as a global organisation in surgical development towards quality care and focusing on patient safety,” he said.
Meanwhile, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Dr Ali Hamsa congratulated Dr Noor Hisham on his appointment, saying it was a recognition of his leadership and professional competence.
Most importantly, he said, it was a recognition of the confidence of the international community in the Malaysian Civil Service which he added was par excellence. – BERNAMA
