KUALA TERENGGANU – The haze situation has hampered fishing activities by coastal fishermen here as they were forced to return to land due to poor visibility.
South Kuala Terengganu Fishermen Association chairman Hasan Ismail said the fishermen left for sea early today, but decided to return when land was not visible to them from the sea due to the haze.
“Their fishing boats are not equipped with compass or navigational system to guide them home. To avoid any untoward incident, they decided to return to land,” he told Bernama here today.
He said there were almost 100 fishing boats belonging to coastal fishermen in South Kuala Terengganu, but none had navigational equipment.
According to the Department of Environment website, the air quality in Kemaman and Paka, as of 9am today, was moderate, with Air Pollutant Index (API) readings at 176 and 115, respectively.
In Kuala Terengganu, it was moderate with an API reading of 74.
An API reading of 0 to 50 indicates good air quality; 51 to 100, moderate; 101 to 200, unhealthy; 201 to 300, very unhealthy and 300 and above, hazardous. – BERNAMA
