Happy Father’s Day, But How Did It All Start?

THIS year, Father’s Day is being celebrated around the world on June 19, and Google has created a special doodle to mark the occasion.

Working on a similar theme as its Mother’s Day doodle, this time the designers have shown the image of a pair of dad’s shoes on a rug with the word Google on it, accompanied with a pair of kiddie shoes that probably indicate how we, as kids, follow our dad’s footsteps so closely.

Each year, the day is celebrated on the thurd Sunday of June to recognise the contribution that fathers and father figures make to the lives of their children.

There are many stories afloat regarding where and when Father’s Day originated, but the most popular is about a young girl called Sonora Dodd of Spokane, Washington. Sonora and her siblings were raised by a single father William Jackson Smart, and back in May 1909, she was apparently listening to a church sermon on Mother’s Day, when the idea of having a day for dads, especially hers, struck her.

The next year, she wanted to celebrate the day on June 5 – her father’s birthday – as Father’s Day and petitioned for the holiday to be rcecognised by the city. But the process took time, and the first Father’s Day was officially celebrated on June 19, 1910. – MyNewsHub
