PETALING JAYA – Petronas Talent Development Programme rider Hafizh Syahrin Abdullah hopes to end his barren run in the World Motorcycle Championship (MotoGP) at the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) this weekend.
Hafizh, 22, though nursing a slight injury that he had suffered during the Australian MotoGP at the Phillip Island Circuit in Australia last Sunday remains optimistic of doing well on his own backyard.
“Every rider dreams of a podium finish. I have finished a number of races in fourth place. May be luck deserted me a few times but I will try my best to finish on the podium in front of the home fans,” he told reporters during a Petronas Raceline Malaysia Team press conference at Pescao55 Concept Store, here today.
Hafizh who is also known as ‘Pescao’ said apart from being proficient in wet conditions, he can also perform well on a dry circuit, especially under the hot and humid conditions in Sepang.
“I may have a slight advantage in terms of the weather here and the fact that I have tried the newly laid track in Sepang,” said the Selangor-born rider who hopes to maintain his top 10 position in the championship.
Hafizh feels it would not be impossible to finish among the top 10, although there are only two rounds remaining, since he is currently in ninth position in the Moto2 category with 106 points.
The season-ending round of the MotoGP will take place at the Valencia Circuit in Spain from Nov 11 to 13.
Meanwhile, Hafizh is expected to know the fate of his contract with Team Petronas Raceline Malaysia, after the last race in Spain.
Senior General Manager of PETRONAS Group Strategic Communications, Rizan Ismail said Hafizh and the team had shown tremendous progress throughout the season.
“He kept progressing well in Moto2 these two years. This year he is ninth spot (overall) but our talent development programme funding doesn’t look at the rider’s achievement alone but a whole range of things are taken into account, including his career advancement,” he told reporters after attending the Petronas Raceline Malaysia Team press conference at Pescao55 Concept Store, here today. – BERNAMA
