Guan Eng Wants Debate With IGP Over PPS Issue

in Latest/Politics

GEORGE TOWN – Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng has challenged Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar to a debate over the arrests of Penang Voluntary Patrol (PPS) unit members.

“How does he justify his statement (by labelling them as gangsters)? Was it based on a few anti-PPS newspaper reports?

“I challenge him to a debate on this issue,” Lim told reporters when met outside George Town police district headquarters, Monday.

On Sunday, a total of 154 PPS unit members were escorted to the Beach Street police station soon after they took part in a state-level Merdeka procession here.

They were then transferred to the George Town police district headquarters to have their statements recorded.

Police have so far released 20 PPS members, including seven women, on police bail.

They are aged 60 and above.

At least two members were rushed to the Penang Hospital after they complained of gastric pains.

Lim expressed displeasure over the detention of state executive councillor Phee Boon Poh, who is also PPS chairman.

Also present was DAP’s legal bureau chief Gobind Singh Deo and other Pakatan Rakyat leaders. – Bernama
