SHAH ALAM – Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng has reiterated his profound gratitude to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak for providing appropriate assistance to the Penang flood victims.
The DAP secretary-general also thanked Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi for his swift action in sending armed forces personnel to help rescue flood victims in Penang.
“I appreciate the federal government for its quick response to my plea of assistance on that fateful early hour of Nov 5.
“I thank Najib, Ahmad Zahid, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim and Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Minister Tan Sri Noh Omar for their help,” he said in his speech at the DAP’s National Special Congress here today.
Almost all areas in Penang were affected by floods with several areas in between 0.2 and one metre of water, followed by strong winds and heavy rain since last Saturday, which left dozens of trees uprooted.
So far, the floods, described as the worst in the state, have claimed seven lives.
Meanwhile, Lim said in the party’s re-election today, many members could not attend the special congress as the Registrar of Societies (ROS) restricted it to only delegates.
He said the DAP was complying, under protest, with the ROS orders for the party to re-elect its 2013 central executive committee (CEC).
Sixty-two candidates are vying for the 20 CEC posts. A total of 1,356 delegates are involved in the election process which started at noon. – BERNAMA
